From Captain Rob
I'm Captain Rob, a USCG-licensed captain with 30 years on the water. Before you buy a boat, start with what you already know and where you need more practice. A boat can be a wonderful next step, but confidence alone does not tell you how prepared you are. The free DockWise Readiness Assessment gives you a practical place to start that conversation.
You answer questions about your boating background, experience, education and instruction. Be honest about the kind of boating you have actually done, not only what you hope to do. Handling a boat in open water is different from bringing it into a crowded marina. Time spent as a passenger also is not the same as time making the decisions at the helm.
Your Readiness Report organizes the information you provide so you can see your background and areas to work on. It is not a boating license, a practical skills examination or a guarantee that a particular trip is safe. Use it as a starting point for a conversation with an instructor or an experienced captain who can watch you handle a boat.
You can take the assessment free in this browser without signing in. Allow about ten minutes and keep your answers realistic. An account is needed if you want to save, share or print your report. Do not treat a high score as permission to skip training, local rules or a careful check of the weather.
After you understand your own experience, look at the boat and the marina separately. A larger boat, an unfamiliar propulsion setup or a tight fairway may require skills you have not practiced yet. DockWise's public marina reports show docking difficulty and marina quality as separate measures. Neither one replaces checking whether your boat fits the actual slip.
My advice is simple: use the report to choose a sensible next step. Take a hands-on lesson, practice departures and returns in calm conditions, and work toward more demanding situations gradually. If buying a boat is your goal, bring your questions to the sea trial. The free assessment helps you prepare those questions; it does not make the purchase decision for you.
Review your actual helm experience, training and comfort with docking before choosing a boat. The free Readiness Assessment helps organize that background; hands-on instruction and a sea trial are still important.
Yes. You can complete the Readiness Assessment in your browser without signing in. An account is needed to save, share or print the report. Separate paid boat reports are not included.
Docking demand varies with the boat, fairway room, slip arrangement and wind. Practice in calm conditions with qualified instruction and review your marina's docking report before attempting more demanding conditions.
