Marina Match: choose a marina for your boat and skills
Compare docking difficulty and marina quality separately before choosing where to keep your boat.

I'm Captain Rob, a USCG-licensed captain with 30 years on the water. When a new boater asks me which marina to choose, I start with the return to the dock. A beautiful setting is worth enjoying, but you also need room to maneuver and a slip you can approach with confidence. This free Marina Match guide helps you use DockWise's published reports to build a shortlist.
Start with two separate measures. Docking Difficulty describes the demands of the marina's recorded layout, fairway room and historical wind exposure. A means easiest to dock and D means hardest. Marina Quality separately describes the recorded facilities, dock condition, amenities and available value information on a scale out of 100. An attractive quality score does not mean docking will be easy.
Browse the free marina directory, open individual reports and compare your options. Regional guides show the published marinas currently covered by DockWise, not every marina in the area. Missing data is not proof that a marina is good or bad. If a measurement is not recorded, ask the marina directly rather than filling in the gap with an assumption.
For a newer boater, a less demanding docking grade can be a useful starting point. Then check the things that matter to your boat: slip dimensions, depth, the approach, fairway room and where you will turn. Ask how the approach changes when the wind comes from a different direction. Visit the marina and, if possible, watch boats similar to yours arrive and leave.
Your experience matters too. If tight spaces or backing into a slip are unfamiliar, arrange hands-on practice before committing to that berth. The free Readiness Assessment can help you organize your experience and training questions. It is not a license or a practical skills test, and a general marina grade is not a personal safety clearance.
This free guide links to public marina reports and browsing tools. It does not create a personalized Marina Compatibility Report or include paid boat reports. Those are separate products with their existing access rules. Use the free information to narrow your choices, then confirm current details with the marina and make the final decision for your boat, your passengers and the conditions on the day.
Common questions
How do I choose a marina as a new boater?
Compare docking difficulty separately from marina quality. Then check the actual slip, depth, fairway room and approach for your boat, and ask about local wind conditions. Visit in person and seek hands-on instruction where needed.
Is Marina Match free?
This guide and the public marina reports are free to browse. Personalized Marina Compatibility Reports and paid boat reports are separate and are not included.
Does a high marina quality score mean docking is easy?
No. Marina Quality and Docking Difficulty are separate scores. A marina can offer strong facilities while having a more demanding docking layout or wind exposure.
